Why I mentor medical students

It has been a while since I last taught medical students... and this email was a surprise and delight to receive recently. Mentoring and teaching medical students from under-represented minorities is important work. Introducing new perspectives and developing a workforce that represents the diversity of the Australian population improves equity in healthcare delivery.

Mentoring students assists them in navigating the challenges of medical school while also helping them develop the skills necessary for their future careers. It encourages them to embrace their unique backgrounds and experiences. Fostering a supportive environment helps dismantle systemic barriers, creating a path toward more equitable healthcare.

I've been involved in mentorship for many years and it is a privilege to help build individual careers and inspire the next generation of healthcare leaders. As a mentor, I've also learnt much from my mentees through their generous sharing of their backgrounds, cultures and experiences. My hope is that these future professionals will be prepared to advocate for social justice and health equity, making a meaningful impact in their communities.
