Do you know about Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA)'s new šŸ’” initiative to improve orthopaedic care for Australians? Last week Michael A SchuetzĀ and Richard PageĀ hosted the launch of the "ACADEMY OF ORTHOPAEDIC EXCELLENCE (ACE)" in Brisbane. The event brought together the entire ecosystem of orthopaedic research - consumer representatives, industry members, insurers, junior and senior orthopaedic researchers, academics from around the country, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)Ā & Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and AgeingĀ Medical Research Future Fund representatives. Why do we need ACE? Whilst there is excellent research occurring in Australia, a network that includes all stakeholders is lacking, resources are limited and pathways into research are difficult to navigate. Inclusion is also a challenge when orthopaedic surgery lacks the diversity and representation of the Australian community. For instance, who is going to benefit from the research? Is there a positive impact for all Australians - women, our 200+ ethnic minorities, our LGBTQI+ communities and those who are physically, geopgraphically or socioeconomically disadvantaged? The USA orthopaedic literature shows that women and under-represented minorities have poorer outcomes for many orthopaedic procedures, yet only one-third of research papers actually analyse gender differences to understand these causes and even fewer analyse for race or identity. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)Ā and the Medical Research Future Fund are focussed on equity in research. However, industry and private funding bodies who support much of the research performed in Australia, do not have the same ethical or policy obligations to consider impact assessment on the community when donating funds to research. Delighted to participate in this exciting and inspirational initiative. Thank you to Michael and Richard for convening an incredibly thought-provoking forum and to all who attended for your important contributions. #diversityĀ #healthcareĀ #equityĀ #researchĀ #orthopaedics
